Introduction:

The Department plays a central role of providing clear guidance in the integration of technology in teaching, learning, research and overall administration of the university. The department ensures that IT infrastructure, service delivery norms and new applications deployments are in line with current industry trends and that the systems put in place add true value to the university.

Departmental Objectives
1. To develop ICT policies, procedures and guidelines for the University.
2. To provide technical support, development and management of ICT infrastructure in terms of hardware and software, servers and data storage.
3. To maintain smooth running of the University network and related systems.
4. To support the automation of key University services for enhanced efficiency.
5. To develop ICT plan for the University
6. To ensure ICT system security
7. To design, develop, maintain and update the University website and multimedia platforms

Mission
Our mission is to provide excellent ICT services to support teaching, Learning, research and management in the university. Our Department’s core values are integrity, freedom to succeed and transparency.

Services

The Department falls under the Office of the Vice Chancellor
It has three main arms:

  1. Service Delivery and Support
    This section is charged with ensuring the availability of IT applications and user support administration across various campuses of the University.
  • Hardware / Software /Graphics support 
  1. Urgently prepare and present hardware and software maintenance schedule
  2. Implement the schedule
  3. Graphic design and related productions
  4. Develop record for all the ICT hardware and software indicating status
  5. Send bulk sms and maintain accounts
  6. Ensure non-serviceable hardware are forwarded to procurement office for disposal
  7. Identify hardware / software needs in the university
  8. Develop clear specification for hardware /software purchase
  • Help desk
  1. Interface the department with client issues related to ICT
  2. Ensuring efficiency, follow-up and responsibility in handling SRF
  • ICT Security 
  1. Disaster recovery & Business continuity planning
  2. Identify the most critical systems that support the university function
  3. Identify possible threats and risks against the above systems
  4. Analyze the vulnerabilities that the systems are faced with
  5. Develop, implement and adopt proper mitigation approaches
  6. User management and security
  7. Create active directory/ Equivalent for the LAN
  8. Ensure Server configuration to achieve; web content filtration, proper fire-walls, IDS/IPS, access restrictions etc
  9. Implement database access and authentication on wi-fi
  10. Implement LAN monitoring tool
  11. Implement remote support
  12. Ensure defense in-depth for LAN resources
  13. Ensure appropriate but regular real time data and systems back-up
  14. Ensure physical security in the department
  15. Install, update and run server-based Antivirus on computers
  16. Training on security

     2.   System Development and Maintenance:
The section manages innovations, new application development and system implementation or rollout.

  • Automation system’s support and maintenance
  1. Ensure all offices and users have timely access to all the automation systems
  2. Provide technical support to users
  3. Implement real-time banking by students
  4. Ensure online access to updated fee statements and provisional transcripts
  5. Ensure that the automation systems operate at optimal levels
  6. Reviewing the success of the systems towards RU’s main objective
  7. Analyze users ‘requirements for the purposes of training
  8. Ensure regular and timely update of the systems’ databases
  9. Implement basic systems security
  • Website
  1. Redesign and implementation of the new website
  2. Accurate transfer of website contents
  3. Ensuring 99.99 per cent website up time
  4. Removal of old / obsolete information from the website
  5. Sourcing and adding new updates (after content filtration)
  6. Ensure full time website security
  7. Implement all features needed to optimize webo-metric ranking
  8. Email management
  9. Interfacing major communication platforms on the RU homepage.
  10. Managing and monitoring all the social media associated with the University
  11. Implementation of e-learning, e-voting and related systems

      3.   Infrastructure – Networks:

This arm of the department ensures consistent network availability and manages bandwidth allocation to users. It also ensures that our IT resources are safeguarded against any form of attacks.

  • Network resource maintenance (LAN and internet) 
  1. Connect all offices and work towards LAN design, and expansion
  2. Ensure LAN and WAN bandwidth allocation, availability and management in all offices
  3. Reduce network congestion and enhance uptime for both LAN and Internet
  4. Re-direct wi-fi to appropriate areas within RU
  5. Create user management platform for both cabled and wireless networks
