Welcome to Rongo University (RU) - A Prestigious Institution with a Rich History

Welcome to Rongo University (RU), a prestigious institution with a rich history dating back to the early 1970s. Discover the journey of our university from its humble beginnings as Kitere Technical School to its current status as a full-fledged public university.

Established in the 1970s as Kitere Technical School, our institution was initially created by the local community as a craft apprenticeship training center. However, in the 1980s, the Southern Nyanza region experienced a growing demand for technical and vocational training. Recognizing this need, the Union of South Nyanza Welfare Association (USNWA), a lobby group, approached President Daniel Arap Moi to transform Kitere Technical School into a public institution.

President Moi not only granted their request but also bestowed the honor of naming the institute after himself. Thus, Moi Institute of Technology (MIT) was established in 1983. This marked a significant milestone for our institution, as it transitioned into a recognized public establishment.

In 2007, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Moi University and Moi Institute of Technology. This collaboration allowed MIT to offer diploma and undergraduate programs in education, business, and human resource management as a satellite campus. The first batch of 100 students, supported by the Rongo Constituency Development Fund, was admitted in January 2008.

The fruitful partnership between Moi University and Moi Institute of Technology led to another milestone. In June 2012, the government elevated Moi Institute of Technology to Rongo University College, becoming a constituent college of Moi University.

Finally, on October 7, 2016, Rongo University College achieved its greatest achievement when it was granted a charter by President Uhuru Kenyatta. This milestone marked the official transformation of Rongo University College into a full-fledged public university.
